CRI听力:Bin Laden's Son-in-Law Sentenced to Life in Prison
Osama bin Laden's son-in-law has been sentenced to life in prison for acting as the voice of al-Qaida after the September 11 attack.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith became the voice of al-Qaida recruitment videos after the 2001 attacks.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan says Abu Ghaith has expressed no remorse for his actions and cited a video in which Abu Ghaith appears amused by the September 11 attack.
Abu Ghaith testified that his role was strictly religious and his defence attorney, Stanley Cohen, says the Kuwaiti cleric will appeal the ruling.
"I'm very optimistic, we will be appealing, I'm very optimistic over our chances on appeal. I think that there were significant errors, both before the trial and during the course of the trial. And I suspect this is not the last you'll hear from Sulaiman Abu Ghaith."
Early in March, a federal jury found the 48-year-old guilty of conspiring to kill Americans, conspiring to provide material support for terrorists, and providing such support.
Abu Ghaith was captured in Jordan last year and brought to the US.
He is the highest-ranking al-Qaida figure to face trial on US soil since the September 11 attacks.
