CRI听力:Curfew Imposed after Attack Leaves Dozens Dead in NE India
India has imposed a curfew in parts of its northeastern state of Assam after suspected tribal guerrillas killed at least 63 people in a series of attacks on Tuesday.
Police say at least 10 women and at least 13 children were killed during the assaults, carried out by suspected militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland.
The attacks were reportedly in retaliation for a government offensive against the rebels in the country's remote hideouts.
India's Junior Interior Minister, Kiren Rijiju:
"This is a tragic incident, we cannot take it lightly. The requirement is that the confidence of the local people, the common people must be restored and we ensure that such incidents are not repeated again."
Assam has a history of sectarian bloodshed. Bodo rebels have been fighting for a separate homeland for their indigenous tribe, which makes up 10 percent of Assam's more than 30 million people.
In the last three decades, they have staged attacks against Adivasi and Muslim settlers in violence that has left at 10,000 people dead.
On Wednesday, a group of people gathered in New Delhi to protest the massacre, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a cabinet meeting to condemn the attack.
