Three Australians are feared dead and another eight are unaccounted for after the White Island volcanic eruption in New Zealand. There were a total of 47 people on the island when the volcano erupted. 24 were Australians, aged between 17 and 72 years old. 13 Australians are in hospital, some in critical condition.

Sydney's air quality index has reached as high as 11 times hazardous levels due to bushfires on the city's outskirts. The worst reading is currently in Macquarie park in Sydney's north-west. The high readings are largely due to poor visibility, although particle levels are also well into hazardous territory in several locations.
Gangland barrister Nicola Gobbo has spoken for the first time since she was revealed as a police informer. Nicola Gobbo met with a 730 team in a secret national location not where she lives. Ms Gobbo claimed she and her young children are stranded overseas. The former lawyer said that Victoria Police threatened to take her children away from her, if she returns to Australia, due to fears for their safety.
And Russia has been handed a 4-year ban from all major sporting events by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The decision means Russia's flag and anthem won't be allowed at the Tokyo Olympics next year and the soccer World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Although athletes who can prove they are untainted by the scandal will be able to compete under a neutral flag.
