A bushfire emergency is continuing in the Perth hills this morning. Hundreds of firefighters are battling an out of control blaze that has already destroyed 59 homes. Authorities set up more evacuation centres overnight as the warning area for the Wooroloo fire continued to grow and residents were told it was too late to leave. The true scale of the damage is still being assessed, but it's believed about 80% of properties have been lost in the rural area of Tilden Park.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has conceded that he got it wrong when he described a report that uncovered historic racism at the club as a historic and proud day. The comments sparked widespread criticism, including from AFLchief Gill McLachlan.
"I got it wrong. I said it was a proud day for Collingwood, and I shouldn't have. I did not — I did not mean we were proud of past incidents of racism, and the hurt that it caused."
Britain's lockdown hero, Captain Sir Tom Moore, has lost his last battle, dying in hospital after testing positive to COVID-19. The 100-year-old British world war II veteran captured the hearts of the nation when he raised millions of pounds for health workers by walking laps of his garden. The Queen has sent a private message of condolence to his family and the UK health minister says Captain Tom was a "great British hero".
