Kangaroo island is again under serious threat this morning, with residents of the island's largest town, Kingscote fleeing to a jetty and relief centre overnight. Two emergency level blazes are burning on the island after fires jumped containment lines yesterday. The heat from South Australia is moving east, with damaging winds and extreme fire danger predicted for Victoria and New South Wales today. And in Western Australia firefighters are battling blazes south of Perth.
US media is reporting Iran may have mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian plane that crashed on Wednesday, killing all 176 people onboard. Senior US and Iraqi officials are quoted as saying a surface to air missile system may have hit the airliner. A team of Ukrainian investigators is looking into that possibility, but iran says initial investigations suggest a mechanical problem caused the plane to explode into flames, mid-air.
A panel of psychiatrists has found alleged paedophile Malka Leifer, is fit to stand trial for extradition to Australia, where she is wanted on 74 charges of sexual molestation and rape. The former principal is accused of abusing several pupils at a Melbourne school where she worked. Ms Leifer fled to Israel in 2008 and has been fighting to stay there since 2014.
And the Queen has asked Palace staff to find a solution after Prince Harry and Meghan Markles's shock announcement that they will step back as senior royals. The BBC is reporting her majesty has directed them to work with senior palace officials and the British government.
