Australians abroad are scrambling to return home, as authorities prepare to shut the country's borders, and airlines flag drastically reduced services. From nine pm, international travellers will be unable to enter the country, but citizens and residents are excluded from the new rules. The prime minister and state and territory leaders will reconvene national cabinet today to consider the latest medical advice. There's been a surge in coronavirus infections in several states in the past 24 hours, with more than 700 cases now confirmed.
More people have died of coronavirus in Italy than in China. Another 427 deaths have been recorded in Italy in the past 24 hours taking the death toll to around three thousand four hundred. Meanwhile in Iran health officials say the virus is now killing one person every ten minutes there. And another 154 people have died in the Unites States, as the country battles more than 10-thousand cases.
An Australian soldier seen shooting an unarmed Afghan man in vision aired on this week's Four Corners has been suspended from duty. Dad Mohammed was shot and killed at close range by an Australian Special Air Service Regiment soldier in 2012 in Afghanistan. A defence investigation found the SAS soldier acted in self defence. The department of defence says the revelations are "serious and disturbing". The defence minister has now referred to the matter to the Australian federal police commissioner.
