The security forces in the Pakistani capital Islamabad have carried out a coordinated attack on the red mosque where radical Islamic students have been holding out against authorities. A number of students have died. Earlier the senior cleric inside the mosque Abdul Rashid Ghazi rejected Pakistani government demands for an unconditional surrender. From Islamabad, Shaury Pensa reports.

A group of students emerged from the mosque to surrender when gunfire interrupted the progress towards safety. Several were shot, some fatally. As the exchange of gunfire intensified, government forces launched a coordinated raid on the compound. Two army personnel carriers attacked the northeast side of the mosque compound, and it continued to soldiers attack from south. Whiles, the personnel carriers fired, the soldiers planted explosives and blew up part of the compound wall. The exchange of fire lasted for half an hour before /.

Iran has unexpectedly announced it's going to stop producing petrol driven cars and move more production to due fuel vehicles which also run on gas. John Lion reports from Tehran.

Just over a week ago, the government introduced petrol rationing, provoking some of the worst violence here in years. Now the Ministry of Industry has gone one step further, announcing that soon all new cars produced here will be duel fuel. In other words, powered by gas rather than petrol. The move will reduce the amount for petrol and could help ease Iran's notorious pollution. But it's not clear the infrastructure is in place yet, either to produce enough gas or to provide enough filling stations.

Gunmen in southern Russia say they have killed 14 soldiers stationed at a military base. The predawn raid took place in the Republic of Ingushetia which borders Chechnya. The security forces confirmed there had been an attack involving automatic weapons in grenade, but denied there are any casualties. If the casualty figures are confirmed it would be the most serious attack in Ingushetia in years.

Magistrates in France investigating an alleged dirty tricks campaign against the French President Nicolas Sarkozy have begun on searching officers of the Foreign Ministry, as inquiry turns its attention to the former Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin. Mr. de Villepin was Foreign Minister when he was alleged to have made an attempt to manipulate in an official inquiry into supposed defense contract kickbacks. He's denied any wrongdoing. Amer Jame Curby reports.

Mr Sarkozy was falsely accused of having secret bank accounts in a Luxembourg clearing house clear stream for bribes collected from the sale of Frence frigates to Taiwan in 1991. It's no secret that Dominique de Villepin and Niccolas Sarkozy have always been rivals and that Mr. de Villepin also harboured presidential ambitions of him own.

The Ukrainian prosecutor general says Russia is failing to cooperate with its inquiry into the poisoning of Viktor Yushchenko in 2004 on the eve of his election as president. The prosecutor said that despite two requests, Moscow had failed to provide a sample of dioxin, the poison used against Mr. Yushchenko.

The American authories have recalled nearly 90,000 Chinese-made toys because of safety fears. Concerns about Chinese-made products have been widely publicized in the United States since contaminated pet food killed 17 dogs. From Washington here is James Coomarasamy.

US Consumer Protection Association has now recalled a brand of children's jewelry because it says it contains dangerously high levels of lead. This comes shortly after recall for similar reasons of a million and a half of the popular Thomas and Friends Toy Chains. Other items including a brand of toy castle have been taken off the market here because they contain choking hazards. The authorities in Beijing have accused the US media of exaggerating the problem. They have also taken action against businesses accused of being unethical and using potentially dangerous practices.

The fomer Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra has formally taken control of the English premier league football club Manchester City. The move follows his acquisition of 75% of shares in the club, worth more than $160 million. Mr. Thaksin was overthrown by the Thai military last September and has since been living in exile mainly in London. Manchester City has also confirmed the former England coach Sven-Gorran Eriksson as its new manager.

Japan's main airline JAl has banned bulldogs from one of its flight, saying the stress of flying can prove fatal for the breed. A spokesman said because of their short flat noses, bulldogs have difficulty in adapting to the unstable temperature on aircraft. He said they were badly affected by vibration and noise.
