At least 105 People have been killed and 240 others were wounded in Northern Iraq when a truck bomb exploded in a crowded village market. The attack happened near the town of Tuz Khurmato. From Baghdad, Mike Sergeant.
It's the highest loss of life in a single attack in Iraq since the middle of April. The bomb went off in a market full of Saturday morning shoppers. Several buildings were completely destroyed by the blast. Many of the injured lay trapped in the rubble for hours. Witnesses described seeing burning cars with dead and wounded people everywhere. There have been a number of other violent attacks across the country. A suicide car bomber killed more than 20 people at a funeral wake near Iraq's border with Iran. The US led military coalition has also suffered losses.

President Musharraf of Pakistan has warned that radical Islamic students besieged in the Red Mosque in the capital Islamabad will be killed unless they give themselves up. But the cleric leading the students in their confrontation with the army, Abdul Rashid Ghazi told the BBC he would not surrender.
"We will not agree to any condition which makes it appear that we have made the slightest concession or that we have bowed to pressure from the government. We would rather die than make any such concession."

The final two Live Earth concerts to raise awareness of global warming are underway in New Jersey and Rio De Janeiro, some 24 hours after the curtain went up in Sydney and Tokyo. Dozens of the biggest names in show business have taken part in the concerts spanning the seven continents of the world.

Live Earth was organized by the former US Vice President Al Gore, who is calling on the developed world to reduce carbon emissions. But critics say the concerts themselves will cause significant carbon emissions. Speaking at the concert in London, the British singer David Gray, admitted slightly tongue-in-cheek that his own efforts to save the planet had been limited.
"I have made some efforts, recycle, changed a couple of light bulbs, walk around quite a lot, but now I'm absolutely not in any way eco-friendly. I'm rock star for God's sake. I've got my sushi chef, my masseur. If they don't come with me, I'm just lost."

The winners of a world wide competition defined the seven new wonders of the world have been announced at a ceremony in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. Three of them are in Latin America, Machu Picchu in Peru, the Chichen Itza Pyramid Mexico and the Statue of Christ The Redeemer in Brazil. The other four are The Great Wall of China, India's Taj Mahal, the Colosseum in Rome and Petra in Jordan. The poll organizers said about 100,000,000 people voted by internet, telephone and text messages. But the UN cultural body UNESCO has distanced itself from the contest saying the poll reflected only the opinion of those who had voted.

NATO has denied accusations by local people in Eastern Afghanistan that its air strikes killed dozens of civilians on Thursday and Friday in the mountainous province of Kunar. A spokesman said NATO forces had attacked only positively identified enemy firing positions. He said some insurgents have been killed but there was no reason to believe there had been civilian casualties. However the governor of Kunar province has now said 25 civilians were killed along with 20 insurgents.

Police in Zimbabwe say that they have arrested 17 more business executives for ignoring a government directive to lower their prices. The arrests come when Zimbabwe announced a new law to enforce price cuts of up to 50% on basic commodities. Official figures suggest inflation in Zimbabwe has soared to 4,500%, the highest level in the world.

The American Venus Williams has won her 4th Wimbledon tennis title by beating Marion Bartoli of France in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. This year for the first time Wimbledon is awarding equal prize money to men and women. After her win, Ms. Williams paid tribute to the former Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King who was at the watch."I see Billie Jean King out there. Jean, you fought three years, I love you. I have played fake-up under her known love tennis more than her. She has done so much for women's tennis. I wouldn't be here without her, and thank you to All England Club Award. So we are playing under equal terms."


The BBC correspondent Alan Johnston who was held for almost four months by kidnapers in Gaza has returned home for an emotional reunion with his family. Speaking to journalists outside his parents' home in Scotland. He said it's hard to believe that just a few days ago he was locked in a cell in the depth of Gaza City, and now he was back with his family in the beautiful, peaceful place.
