The top American military commander in Iraq, general David Petraeus, says fighting the insurgency there is a long-term endeavor, which could take many years. Speaking in a BBC interview, general Petraeus said quelling an insurgency on average took nine or ten years. He insisted that the current US troop surge in Iraq was achieving progress, although a lot of work remained to be done. Pressure on President Bush's Iraq strategy is mounting. The senate majority leader, Democrat senator Harry Reid, appealed for disaffected Republicans to join him in pushing for a new strategy.
"We have an opportunity in next couple of weeks to truly change our ex-strategy, to make America more secure, more safe. The question is whether President Bush and the senate Republicans will join in that effort. I hope they do. The American people expect this change, and they expect it now."
President Bush has invoked a rarely used power known as executive privilege to deny a request from the US congress for information about the dismissal of eight federal prosecutors. The judiciary panels of both the senate and the House of Representatives want to hear testimony from two former White House aides relating to the sackings, which the Democrats say were politically motivated. The White House says they were not sacked for political reasons, but because they were ineffective. The White House said the former aides might be allowed to speak to investigators in private.
A federal court in the United States has found a leader of the Colombian rebel groups, the FARC, guilty of conspiracy in the kidnapping of three US military contractors held hostage by the group since 2002. The rebel leader Ricardo Palmera was extradited to the US three years ago to face kidnapping and drug trafficking charges. Will Grand now reports.
Mr. Palmera is the first member of the FARC to be convicted of involvement in the capture of the men, something he denied throughout his trial. He claimed he had never seen them. The US government said Mr. Palmera was one of the group's top leaders, closely involved in fund raising activities through drug trafficking.
Italian pasta manufactures say their prices will rise by about 20% later this year, with strong domestic and export demand for their pasta. Italian Manufactures are increasingly forced to import the high quality durum wheat they need, particularly from Canada and Syria. David Willey reports from Rome.
According to the president of the Italian Pasta Manufacturers Association, Mario Rummo, the Canadians who've said they had no more durum wheat for sale until November. While Syria has just banned the export of grain. The result will be a price hike about 20% for spaghetti and fettuccine by the autumn. Global warming appears to be one of the main reasons for decline in production in some traditional durum wheat growing areas in the Mediterranean.

The Argentine government has given its backing to the Economy Minister Felisa Miceli who's been accused of accepting bribes after a bag containing $65,000 was found in her office. The President's Chief of Staff said Felisa Miceli will stay in her job despite what he called the appearance of possible wrongdoing. Opposition politicians have called on President Nestor Kirchner to sack the minister. Felisa Micel insisted that there were nothing illegal about the cash and said it had been put in her office toilet for safe keeping.
The Brazilian government has created a new map which it says allows it to view exactly the area and location of the country's public-owned forests. The Brazilian Forestry Service's plan is putting the map on the Internet as part of efforts to tackle deforestation and illegal land seizures.
The United Nations says it's suspended its construction projects in the Gaza Strip because of a shortage of cement and other building supplies. The director of the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza said $93 million worth of projects were affected including schools, water networks and medical facilities.
Nearly 200 cyclists competing in the Tour De France were affected by a pileup near the finishing line after a group of riders took a bend too fast and crashed. Many cyclists finished the stage from Dunkerque in France to Gand in Belgium covered in cuts and bruises. The BBC commentator Simon Brendton described the crash.
"15:20 riders have gone down, including I think the yellow jersey of Fabien Cancellara, and they have completely blocked the entire road. Now let's have a look at what happens here. There was a touching of wheels I think, and suddenly bikes and bodies all over the road, a couple of riders'd got a very nasty crash into the buries at the side of the road, and I'm sure I can see the yellow jersey of Cancellara right in the middle of it."
