The security forces in Egypt have finally dispersed thousands of demonstrators after hours of clashes near the defence ministry in Cairo. A nighttime curfew is being imposed on the area. The authorities said an army conscript died of his wounds. Hundreds of people were injured, and there have been many arrests. From Cairo, Jon Leyne.
It all began as protesters outside the defence ministry in Cairo started attacking the building. They tried to break through a protective ring of barbed wire, something they must have known would provoke fury from the military. Soldiers responded with water cannon and tear gas. Both sides threw rocks at each other in clashes that lasted several hours. There were some brutal scenes. Eventually the army brought in reinforcements. Scores of protesters were arrested, and the army says proceedings against them have already started in military courts.

There was chaos as people tried to escape the flames, but so far most of the injuries appear to be light burns. Police officials say the explosions were probably caused by a cigarette or a lighter, and for now are ruling out arson. After the accident, the concert continued, and President Serzh Sargsyan gave a speech without mentioning the explosion.
At least 23 people have been killed in gruesome circumstances in the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo, on the border with the United States. Nine bodies with signs of torture were found hanging from a bridge. Hours later, 14 decapitated bodies were discovered in a vehicle. Their heads were found in ice boxes dumped outside the mayor's office. Nuevo Laredo is the scene of a feud between two of Mexico's biggest drugs gangs, who are fighting for control of smuggling routes into the US.
