It all began as protesters outside the defence ministry in Cairo started attacking the building. They tried to break through a protective ring of barbed wire, something they must have known would provoke fury from the military. Soldiers responded with water cannon and tear gas. Both sides threw rocks at each other in clashes that lasted several hours. There were some brutal scenes. Eventually the army brought in reinforcements. Scores of protesters were arrested, and the army says proceedings against them have already started in military courts.

A Belgian woman known only as Marie Anne S has alleged she was forced to take part in a sex act against her will at a party attended by Mr Strauss-Kahn at a hotel in Washington DC in December 2010.

There was chaos as people tried to escape the flames, but so far most of the injuries appear to be light burns. Police officials say the explosions were probably caused by a cigarette or a lighter, and for now are ruling out arson. After the accident, the concert continued, and President Serzh Sargsyan gave a speech without mentioning the explosion.
