President Obama has gone to Colorado to meet victims and relatives of Friday's mass shooting at a cinema in the Denver suburb of Aurora. Mr Obama is visiting some of the injured and meeting families who lost loved ones. The governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, said those involved were determined to overcome the trauma .

"The state is, is heartbroken. Still I think it was Hemingway says the world breaks us all, but afterward, we're stronger in the broken places. I think that's (the,) what we heard in the hospitals yesterday. We went to many of the hospitals and visited families and the victims, and there was a buoyancy that's already the resiliency where people were not gonna let this, you know, define their life. They were gonna fight back." Nine people are still in a critical condition in hospital after the attack by a lone gunman that left 12 people dead.

Government forces in Syria have been hitting back at rebels in Damascus in the country's second city Aleppo. From Beirut, Jim Muir sent this report.

"We purged the area of gunmen and chased the final remnant out", said this government soldier interviewed by state television in the Qabun district of northeast Damascus. All around him was destruction and the bodies of what the TV described as terrorists killed in the fighting. It's believed these forces are from the ultra-loyal and much-feared fourth division commanded by President Assad's brother Maher. Mr Assad himself met with his army chief of staff and gave him his orders. They seem to be clear get Damascus and Aleppo back under control.

The army in Madagascar has stormed a military camp near the island's international airport following a mutiny by other soldiers. It said the situation was now under control. Karen Allen reports from Johannesburg.

Eyewitnesses report an exchange of small arms fire and explosions coming from inside the military camp situated close to the main airport. A wounded rebel soldier who emerged from the barracks confirmed there had been clashes between the army and mutinying soldiers. The security services say armed rebel soldiers forced their way into the barracks in a dawn assault, firing in the air and blocking entry into the camp. Although the motive remains unclear, it reflects the fragile state of the island after President Marc Ravalomanana was ousted in a coup in 2009 and forced into exile in South Africa.

Bradley Wiggins has become the first British rider to win cycling's most prestigious race, the Tour de France. Wiggins went into the last day more than three minutes ahead of his nearest rival. In keeping with race convention, he was not challenged on the final ride to the finish line in Paris. Speaking from the podium, Wiggins thanked the thousands of fans who lined the Champs Elysees.

"It's been a magical couple of weeks for the team, and for British cycling. And some dreams come true. And my mother over there, she's now, her son's won the Tour de France. So, thank you, everyone. Cheers. Have a safe journey home and don't get too drunk."

His fellow, Briton Christopher Froome finished second. Mark Cavendish, another British rider, won the final stage into Paris for the fourth year in a row – the first man to do so.

And that's the BBC News.
