President Obama has gone to Colorado to meet victims and relatives of Friday's mass shooting at a cinema in the Denver suburb of Aurora. Mr Obama is visiting some of the injured and meeting families who lost loved ones. The governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, said those involved were determined to overcome the trauma .

Government forces in Syria have been hitting back at rebels in Damascus in the country's second city Aleppo. From Beirut, Jim Muir sent this report.

"We purged the area of gunmen and chased the final remnant out", said this government soldier interviewed by state television in the Qabun district of northeast Damascus. All around him was destruction and the bodies of what the TV described as terrorists killed in the fighting. It's believed these forces are from the ultra-loyal and much-feared fourth division commanded by President Assad's brother Maher. Mr Assad himself met with his army chief of staff and gave him his orders. They seem to be clear get Damascus and Aleppo back under control.

A wave of bombings across Iraq has killed at least 17 people and wounded many others – some of the worst attacks occurred south of Baghdad. Elsewhere, bomb exploded in the southern city of Najaf and the northern city of Mosul. Rami Ruhayem reports from Baghdad.

Two blasts shook the neighborhood of Madaen and in southeast Baghdad as people prepared to break their fast on the second day of Ramadan. The city of Mahmudiyya also in the south was struck by three blasts – one of them caused by a rocket attack on a small hospital. Earlier in the day, the Shia holy city of Najaf in southern Iraq was hit by a blast which injured 23 people. It was a rare attack in the city that's been considered relatively safe in recent years and which has seen an influx of investment and the boom in religious tourism.

A disabled war veteran has set himself on fire in Israel just hours before the funeral of another man who did the same thing. A witness said he poured liquid over himself from a bottle, then ignited it with a cigarette lighter. Passers-by put out the flames, but the man who was in a wheelchair suffered extensive burns. On Friday, an Israeli man died after setting himself ablaze in approaches against financial hardship.

The army in Madagascar has stormed a military camp near the island's international airport following a mutiny by other soldiers. It said the situation was now under control. Karen Allen reports from Johannesburg.

Eyewitnesses report an exchange of small arms fire and explosions coming from inside the military camp situated close to the main airport. A wounded rebel soldier who emerged from the barracks confirmed there had been clashes between the army and mutinying soldiers. The security services say armed rebel soldiers forced their way into the barracks in a dawn assault, firing in the air and blocking entry into the camp. Although the motive remains unclear, it reflects the fragile state of the island after President Marc Ravalomanana was ousted in a coup in 2009 and forced into exile in South Africa.

Fifteen people have been killed in a bus crash in central Nepal. It's the latest in a series of fatal accidents on Nepal's mountain roads which can become treacherous in the rainy season. Last week, almost 40 people were killed when an overcrowded bus plunged off the road.
