The Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner has made an uNPRecedented leap from the edge of space. Mr Baumgartner stepped out of the capsule on the end of the helium balloon that had taken him to an altitude of 39 km  He sped towards the landing site in New Mexico at more than 1,000km an hour, breaking a high altitude record that had stood since 1960. At a press conference, Baumgartner described his moment a doubt just before jumping.

What appeared at the time when (I) really thought I'm in trouble because I have man-out push button where I can release a drogue chute shoot which push me out of the flat spin. But at the same time, I knew that if I push that button, the thing is all over. We are not gonna fly supersonic. And it's hard, when you fall down at that speed, you have to make that decision, you know, somehow we have to make that call, do I push that button and stay alive, or do I fight all my way down and break the speed of sound and after a couple of seconds, I had that feeling, I get it under control and I did. That's the reason why I broke the speed of sound today.

The constituent assembly in Libya has elected Ali Zidan, an independent, as the new Prime Minister by a large majority, he has 15 days to propose a new cabinet. From Tripoli Rana Jawad reports.

Local observers see Libya's new Prime Minister elect Ali Zidan as a liberal with a strong personality. He served as the Europe representative to the former transitional government, and was seen as a key player in convincing the ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy to support the uprising against Colonel Gaddafi. His election comes at a critical time with pressing issues like the lack of a government control over security in the country and the need to stabilize tense areas in western Libya, there recently witnessed deadly clashes.

Syrian activists have reported artillery attacks in Nashar neighbourhood of Aleppo for the second day, at least two people were killed there on Saturday. The Syrian army is reported to have regained control of a historic mosque in the city after fierce clashes with rebels. An amateur video showed the mosque on fire.

Officials in Nigeria say gunmen have killed at least 20 people in an attack on a village in the northern state of Kaduna. Many of the victims died at a mosque in the village. The BBC's Tomi Oladipo has been monitoring the situation from Lagos.

Residents of Dogo Dawa said the attackers stormed the village just before sunrise shooting and stabbing anyone inside. Worshippers at a mosque were also targeted before the raiders moved to the house of the community chief and killed him too. A local official said the village had experienced similar but smaller attacks in the past, during which residents had killed robbers and then received warnings of revenge attacks in response. The community leader said they had informed the police of this written warning but nothing was done about it. Police in Kaduna state confirmed that Sunday's attack happened but refused to comment on the claim that there had been a lead prior to the incident.

Some 2000 police officers in Brazil and numbers of the armed forces backed up by armoured vehicles and helicopters have taken control of two of Rio de Janeiro's most violent shantytowns or favelas. Similar operations have been launched in more than 20 favelas ahead of the Football World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics two years later.

The party's leader, Bart de Wever has won the race to become mayor of Antwerp, the Europe's largest port cities. Maddy Savage reports from Brussels.

The city has been run by socialist politicians for decades and Bart de Wever told the crowds he had never expected to do so well there. The NVA has long argued that the Dutch speaking part of the Belgium - Flanders has spent too much money subsidizing Wallonia, the poorer French-speaking region in the south. He believes his party's success at a local level will now help him build a platform to take on the country socialist Prime Minister Elio di Rupo in the country's next national elections in 2014.

Israeli air strikes have killed two militants in central Gaza bringing to five the total number of Palestinians killed there since Saturday. The Israeli military said it targeted a rocket squad, one of the militants killed in the Israeli attacks has been identified as the Salafist leader, Hisham al-Saedni who was killed on Saturday night.

A court in Israel has ruled that manuscripts written by Franz Kafka must be transferred to the country's national library in Jerusalem  The writer, who belonged to the German speaking Jewish community in Prague, left his unpublished work to his friend Max Brod asking him to burn them after his death which occurred in 1924. However Max Brod ignored his friend's request.
