The US and Russia have signed a memorandum of understanding to minimize the risk of their aircraft coming into accidental contact in the skies above Syria. It comes after several instances in which the US accused Russia of unsafe and un professional conduct by flying too close to its aircraft. A Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the memorandum contained protocols for aircrews to follow. “These protocols include maintaining professional airmanship at all times, the use of specific communication frequencies and establishment of a communication line on the ground. The MOU does not establish zones of cooperation, intelligence sharing or any sharing of target information in Syria. The discussions in which this MOU is developed do not constituteUS cooperation or support for Russia's policy or actions in Syria. In fact, far from it, we continue to believe that Russia's strategy in Syria is counterproductive.”
