The authorities in the Spanish city of Barcelona say 13 people have been killed and 80 injured by a van, which deliberately drove into them at a popular tourist market. The vehicle moved at speed through Las Ramblas in the city center, before being abandoned by the driver who ran away. Hundreds of tourists and local people took shelter in shops and churches, as police searched for suspects. Hours later, two of them, including a man of Moroccan origin, were arrested. Spanish media say another suspect was killed in a police shootout on the outskirts of the city. The Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, who is on his way to Barcelona, says he will be coordinating efforts to reinforce security, while the Catalan President, Carles Puigdemont, has called for solidarity.

The U.S. Defense Secretary, James Mattis, has warned North Korea of strong military consequences, if it were to initiate hostilities. He told reporters the response would be overwhelming, but also urged the North to avoid provocation. After a meeting with American and Japanese officials, General Mattis said the two countries would step up their defense cooperation.

Portugal is declaring a state of emergency to unlock funds to combat fires that are devastating some of the country's forests. 3,000 Portuguese firefighters have been in action in the north and center of Portugal since Wednesday, trying to prevent the flames reaching villages and towns.

A new report says more than 82 million bribes were paid in Nigeria in the year leading up to May 2016. The survey by the U.N. and the Nigerian Statistics Bureau said almost a third of adults have paid a bribe to an official or have asked for one.

Police have put a red alert on South Africa's border to prevent the Zimbabwean First Lady from fleeing the country. Grace Mugabe is accused of beating a 20-year-old model in a Johannesburg hotel.
