The governor of Texas has warned residents that the worst of the flooding triggered by storm Harvey is not over. Greg Abbotts said another 14 counties have been included in the disaster zone adding that the National Guard deployment would double. The storm has now moved into the neighboring US state of Louisiana.

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the US Secretary of State Rex Tillersion that any further strengthening of sanctions against North Korea would be counter-productive. Russian Foreign Ministry statement says Mr. Lavrov stressed the diplomacy was the only way to overcome tensions and he urged restraint from any military steps.

The Pentagon has acknowledged that there are about 11,000 US troops in Afghan, significantly more than the 8,400 previously disclosed. Officials say the new tally includes temporary and covert units as well as regular forces.

The US-led coalition against the Islamic State group has bombed the route in Syria of a convoy of IS fighters and their families to stop their evacuation from Lebanese border under a truce deal. A statement said the coalition had left crates in the road in order to prevent militants reaching the Iraqi border area.

The court in Brazil has ordered the immediate suspension of a government decree that would open up a vast natural reserve in the Amazon to commercial mining. The court also ruled that any change to its status must be considered by the Brazilian congress.

The President of Cameroon, Paul Biya has ordered the release from prison of three protest leaders in the country’s English speaking region. A Supreme Court judge, a lawyer and a university lecturer had been facing terrorism charges. They led an Anglophone opposition group which has now been banned.

The Food and Drug Administration in the United States has approved the first treatment for childhood leukemia using genetically engineered blood cells. Procedure known as CAR T therapy modifies and uses the patients’ immune system to seek out and destroy cancer cells.
