Emergency workers helped by teams of volunteers are searching the rubble of collapsed buildings in central Mexico for survivors of a powerful earthquake. Nearly 250 people are confirmed dead. The victims include at least 20 children whose school in Mexico City was brought down by the quake.

Hurricane Maria has begun lashing the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Residents there and in nearby Puerto Rico have been warned that the impact could be catastrophic. Forecasts say the category-5 storm has intensified with winds of more than 280 kilometers an hour.

The Supreme Court in Kenya is due to set out in full shortly its reasons for annulling last month’s presidential election. The court ruled that President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win was marred by irregularities, following an appeal by its defeated rival Raila Odinga.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria has said militant violence in Borno State has reached new lows of brutality and horror. Recent attacks by the Islamist group Bok Haram have killed at least 45 people there. More than 80 children have been used to suicide bombers this year.

The Indian company Tata Steel and a German rival Thyssenkrupp have taken the first step towards merging their European operations. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding after more than a year of negotiations. They expect to finalize the deal next year. 4000 jobs are likely to be cut in the merger.

And Google has defended the efforts of technology companies to combat the spread of extremist content on the Internet ahead of a meeting in New York later. Google’s Senior Vice President Kent Walker told the BBC that Twitter alone had removed a million accounts. The leaders of Britain, France and Italy are meeting the biggest technology companies on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
