The people of Iraq's Kurdistan region have voted massively in favor of indepedance in a referendum. Electoral officials say there was 92% yes vote. The holding of the poll is very much opposed by regional powers, including Turkey and Iran as well as Iraq's central government.
A huge crowd has attended a funeral in Tehran for an Iranian soldier, who was captured and beheaded by Islamic State militants. Mohsen Hojaji was taken captive last month for a fight in Syria. An image of the young man standing stoically moments before his death moved many Iranians.
The leaders of Canada and Britain have criticized the US decision to impose tariffs of more than 200% on planes billed by Canadian firm Bombardier.
The Russian president Vladimir Putin has announced that Moscow will destroy its last remaining chemical weapons later today, three years ahead of schedule. He also accused the United States of failing to fulfill its own obligations to get rid of weapons stockpiles.
Human Rights Watchers has accused the army in Cameroon of forcibly returning of at least 100,000 asylum seekers to neighboring Nigeria. It said some of Nigerians were tortured and sexually abused. The campaign group said the violence was in retaliation for Boko Haram attacks on Cameroon.
The Irish Airline Ryanair says it will cancel a further 18,000 flights between November and March. The decision will affect about 400,000 passengers. That's more than they have already had their travel plans disrupted by Ryanair surprised announcement earlier this month, for it was cancelling 50 flights a day, until the end of October.
Ugandan politicians have fought inside parliament for a second day running over plans to amend constitution to allow President Yoweri Museveni to stand in next election. They wielded chairs and microphones during the prolonged scuffles in the parliamentary chamber.
