The people of Iraq's Kurdistan region have voted massively in favor of indepedance in a referendum. Electoral officials say there was 92% yes vote. The holding of the poll is very much opposed by regional powers, including Turkey and Iran as well as Iraq's central government.

A huge crowd has attended a funeral in Tehran for an Iranian soldier, who was captured and beheaded by Islamic State militants. Mohsen Hojaji was taken captive last month for a fight in Syria. An image of the young man standing stoically moments before his death moved many Iranians.

That's more than they have already had their travel plans disrupted by Ryanair surprised announcement earlier this month, for it was cancelling 50 flights a day, until the end of October.
