Iranian officials say more than 328 people are now known to have been killed by a powerful earthquake that struck just across the border in a mountainous region of Iraq. They say more than 2500 people have been injured. Buildings have come down and electricity supplies have been cut.

Scientists to the UN Climate Conference in Germany say global emissions of carbon dioxide are projected to rise in 2017 for the first time in 4 years. They say the main cause for the expected increase of about 2% has been a great use of coal in China. Some climate experts had thought the global CO2 emission might have peaked.

President Trump has told reporters he has a good relationship with the controversial Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte. He was speaking after the two men met in Manila on the sidelines of the annual summit of southeastern Asian nations. A White House spokesman said the subject of human rights was raised by President Trump.

Asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea say the officials have taken further steps to try to force them to leave a detention center which was officially shut down two weeks ago. The men say water tanks have been drained. And more of the fence surrounding the compound on Manus island have been dismantled.

Polling is taking place in the self-proclaimed state of Somaliland in the presidential election which the authorities hope will boost their case for international recognition. The region broke away 26 years ago.

Amnesty International says forces loyal to president Assad, Syria have committed crimes against humanity with what it calls a surrender or starve strategy towards besieged areas. Amnesty accuses all sides of violating international law.

A majority of EU members will pledge to co-operate more closely on defence at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels later. At least 20 countries will sign up to the French and German-led plan.
