The entire board of the US Gymnastics authorities is to resign over its handling of the sex abuse scandal involving the former team doctor Larry Nassar. The US Olympic Committee has threatened to strip the board of its status as a sports governing body if not all of its directors stood down. On Wednesday, Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison on sex abuse charges.
Several of the richest and most influential men in Saudi Arabia have been released after reaching a financial settlement with the authorities. They were detained in an anticorruption purge last November. Those freed included the head of NBC, one of the biggest Arabian television networks.
The Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier has won a trade case in the United States, overturning a decision to impose almost 300% tariff on imports of its sea series of aircraft. The US International Trade Commission voted to reject the complaint that Bombardier was selling planes below cost price.
The French President Emmanuel Macron has called for tough sanctions against Venezuela after the Supreme Court in Caracas banned the main opposition coalition from taking part in presidential elections due in April. Mr. Macron said that for a long time now Venezuela had not been a democracy.
A search operation is under way in the Western Pacific Nation of Kiribati for a ferry which has been missing for more than a week. The vessel with about 50 people on board left the island of Nonouti for a routine two-day voyage to Betio the country’s main port. The Royal New Zealand air force has sent an aircraft to help.
A Moscow cinema has stop screening the banned film The Death of Stalin after a visit from several police offices. The pioneer cinema had been showing the British comedy in defiance of a government ban. The movie is a satire on the power struggle that follows Stalin’s death.
