China says it will fight back firmly after President Trump said he was prepared to impose further tariffs as part of a deepening trade dispute. Mr. Trump unveiled plans for duties on another 200 billion dollars of imports from China if Beijing retaliated against on an initiative round of US tariffs.

The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is visiting China for the third time this year. He arrived in Beijing a week after his summit with Donald Trump in Singapore.

Earlier, the South Korean Defense Ministry confirmed that joint military exercises with the United States scheduled for August had been suspended.

The US Secretary of Homeland Security has defended the government’s policy of separating children from their parents when they crossed illegally from Mexico. Kirstjen Nielsen said it was up to Congress to change the law. She insisted the United States was a country of compassion and heart.

Members of parliament in Canada have approved the legalization of cannabis for recreational use. The bill must now be endorsed by the Senate which can delay but not block it before being signed into law.
Thailand has carried out the death penalty for the first time in 9 years. A 26-year old man was executed by lethal injection. He has been convicted of murder and robbery. The Human Rights group Amnesty International condemned the execution as deplorable.

The Australia authorities have fined the US technology giant Apple more than 6.5 million dollars for misleading customers about their rights in connection with faulty devices. The Australian consumer watchdog brought the case after complaints that the company had refused to fix iphones and ipads previously repaired by someone else.

Norway has tested a two-seat electric plane as a part of efforts to tackle climate change. It plans to have all short-haul flights powered by electricity by 2040.
