Hello, I'm Justine Greene with the BBC news.

Early results in India's general elections suggest the governing BJP and its allies led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi are heading for a comfortable majority in the lower House of Parliament. The BJP-led alliance is poised to get well over three hundred seats in the 542-member House. Rahul Tandon who is in Calcutta says whoever wins faces big problems. This has been one of the most divisive campaigns that we've seen in this country, not just on the basis of religion, but also on the basis of caste. And there are massive economic challenges that will face the next government coming in. Unemployment is high. India needs to create almost ten to twelve million jobs every year, just to keep up with the number of young people who enter the market. About six hundred million ballots were cast, making it the biggest democratic exercise in the world.

The leader of the former Colombian rebel group the FARC, Rodrigo Londono has reaffirmed his commitment to the peace process, saying the party will never return to war. Another former FARC commander, Ivan Marquez has said it had been a mistake for the rebels to hand over their weapons. James Read has more details. Ivan Marquez was the FARC's lead negotiator in talks that ended fifty years of conflict, but last year, he refused to take up his seat in the Colombian Senate and went into hiding. Now, he's accused the government of breaking the terms of the accord by arresting another former commander on drugs charges. He says the rebels should never have given up their guns. In response, the FARC leader Rodrigo Londono has defended the decision to turn the movement into a democratic political party, but there's no doubt the peace deal he signed is under growing strain.

Britain has rejected a UN resolution that demands it give back control of the Chagos Islands in the Indian ocean to Mauritius within six months. The non-binding vote in New York saw 116 countries support the resolution. Britain kept control of the Chagos when Mauritius became independent in 1965. James Robbins reports. Reacting to the defeat, Britain's ambassador to the UN Dame Karen Pierce said the joint UK-US military base on the largest of the island, Diego Garcia, helped keep people in Britain and around the world safe from terrorism, organized crime and piracy. That meant, she said, the islands would only be given to Mauritius when they were no longer needed for defense purposes. James Robbins reporting.

World Football's governing body FIFA has scrapped plans to expand the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from 32 to 48 teams. FIFA said there was not enough time to make the necessary changes, which would have required Qatar to share hosting duties with other countries in the region.
