The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that Washington no long considers Israeli settlements built in the occupied West Bank to be illegal. The move breaks with total four decades of state department policy. The state department first drew up legal opinion that the settlements were inconsistent with international law in 1978.

Prominent figures in Hong Kong acting as mediators have entered the blockaded Polytechnic University campus and persuaded a number of protesters to leave. A journalist for the Reuters news agency told BBC that several dozen, most younger activists left and the police agreed to give them safe passage. Those still inside the campus are described as exhausted but tenacious, that insist they’ll not surrender.

The U.N nuclear watch dog says Iran has accumulated more heavy water than it’s allowed under its nuclear deal with major powers. The International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran has slightly exceeded the 130-ton limit of heavy water and component part of nuclear reactor it’s developing in Iraq.

Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil has gone up by nearly 30% in 12 months. That’s the highest level of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon in a decade.

The army in Mali says seven of its soldiers were killed and 15 wounded in an attack while they were on a joint patrol on the northeast border with Niger. It didn’t name the assailants.

Women professional footballers in Spain have halted a strike after all eight first division matches were called off at the weekend. They are asking for a minimum wage of nearly $18,000 a year, incremental payments for staying with the same team for more than two seasons and maternal pay. They have agreed to hold a month of talks with the clubs.
