BBC News. Hello, I'm Jerry Smit.
President Trump has lashed out at his French counterpart for his recent comments about NATO amid an acrimonious start to the alliance's 70th birthday meeting in Britain. Mr. Trump said Emmanuel Macron's remarks suggesting the NATO was suffering brain death were very dangerous and insulting. Nobody needs NATO more than France and frankly the one that benefits really the least is the United States. We benefit the least. We're helping Europe. Europe unites and they go against a common foe that may or may not be a foe; can't tell you that. But there are other foes out there also. But I think nobody needs it more than France. And that's why I think when France makes a statement like they made about NATO, that's a very dangerous statement for them to make. Other tensions within NATO have been on openview. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he'll oppose the alliance's plan for the defense of the Baltic if it doesn't back Turkey over its fight against groups it considers terrorists.

President Trump has also hit out at French plans to tax digital giants from next month, which will chiefly affect the US tech sector. Mr. Trump said, although he didn't love companies like Facebook and Google, if anyone was going to tax them, it would be America, not France. Washington has threatened to slap an additional $2.4 billion's worth of tariffs on French luxury goods in retaliation for the tax, a move France has called unacceptable. From Paris, here's Hugh Schofield. The French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said it was not the kind of behavior we expected from the US towards one of its principal allies. And he said he would be in contact with the newly installed EU Commission to ensure that if the US measures go into effect, there is a strong European riposte. France is argued from the start that its digital services tax is not aimed specifically at US concerns like Amazon or Google, even if they are the companies that will end up paying the most.

Scientists say they're almost certain that the decade since 2010 has been the hottest on record. The provisional figures released by the World Meteorological Organization also suggested this year will be the second or 3rd hottest ever. Matt McGrath reports. Every decade since the 1980s has been warmer than the one before it. The 10 years from 2010 are no different. Although the WMO only have temperature data up to October this year, the scientists are confident enough to say that we are experiencing another extremely warm year. Many parts of the world experienced unusually high temperatures this year. July was confirmed as the warmest month ever recorded. The catamaran carrying the teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg to the Madrid climate conference has arrived in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. Ms. Thunberg who refuses to fly to avoid carbon emissions will take an overnight train to the Spanish capital.
