Pope Francis has called for the protection of migrants and refugees and an end to injustice in the world. In his traditional Christmas message, the Pope said people crossing deserts and seas in the hope of finding somewhere they could lead a dignified life, face a wall of indifference. The Pope also prayed people in conflict zones including Syria, Yemen and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Typhoon Phanfone has caused major floods and destruction in the Philippines. Tens of thousands of people have left stranded. Police say at least six people are missing.
The authorities in Chile said at least 200 homes have been destroyed by the fire which broke out in the city of Valparaiso on Tuesday. The interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel said the evidence suggested the blaze had been started deliberately.
The Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has condemned the forced conscription of an activist working for his anti-corruption foundation. Ruslan Shaveddinov was seized at his home on Monday and flown to the remote Novaya Zemlya archipelago. An army official said Mr.Shaveddinov had long evaded military service.
Iran has cut off a mobile internet in at least four provinces after anti-government protestors called for a new mass gathering this Thursday. The gathering is intended to commemorate civilians killed during protests that started last month in reaction to a fuel price increase and then turned political.
More than 70 people in France have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after feeling unwell during Christmas Mass. The church in the northern town of Carlepoint had to be evacuated. 21 people were taken to hospital.
Queen Elizabeth has spoken at the value of reconciliation in her annual Christmas message after a year that's seen harsh divisions in Britain over Brexit. She said that being willing to put past differences behind us honored the freedom and democracy won at great cost.
