Hello, I'm Tom Watts with the BBC news.
Researchers in the United States and Britain say an artificial intelligence system developed by Google Health has proved as accurate as radiologists in spotting breast cancer in mammograms and has the potential to get even better. The American Cancer Society says that radiologists miss 1/5 of breast cancers in mammograms, as well as recording a number of false positives. With AI, computers can learn to identify cancers based on the actual results of thousands of mammograms. Mozziyar Etemadi of Northwestern University was one of the co-authors of the report.
The most exciting part of this work is that we're able to catch 9% more cancer at screening. Also very exciting is that we're able to reduce the amount of false positives by 5.7%. These tools allow clinicians to have significantly more free time to concentrate on what we all went to medical school for, which is to actually take care of patients.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will ask parliament for immunity from prosecution in three cases in which he's charged with bribery and fraud. Mr. Netanyahu, who has denied any wrongdoing, said the charges against him were politically motivated. Mr. Netanyahu's main rival Benny Gantz of the centrist Blue and White party said the prime minister was attempting to make himself above the law. Sebastian Usher has more.
Many people have written Mr. Netanyahu's epitaph but Mr. Netanyahu clearly hasn't read any of that and doesn't believe in it. We're seeing another dramatic twist of many people in Israel, commentators, analysts unsure, other politicians whether he would actually take this step because it is risky. Polls in Israel show that just over 50% of Israeli population don't approve of this. They see him as putting himself above the law by doing this, and he's going to be facing a 3rd election in a year come March.
The leader of Austria's Conservative People's party, Sebastian Kurz, has agreed to form a coalition government with the Greens. The deal returns Mr. Kurz to office and brings the Greens into government for the first time. Bethany Bell is in Vienna.
The deal with the Green party marks a swing to the left for Sebastian Kurz. His last coalition was with the far-right Freedom Party. Austria went to the polls in September after the last government collapsed because of a corruption scandal involving the former head of the far-right. But the talks to form a new coalition with the Greens were difficult and lengthy. Mr. Kurz said the deal he'd reach showed it was possible to protect Austria's borders and the environment. The Greens will control 4 of 15 ministries. Bethany Bell reporting.
The former National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern, who oversaw phenomenal growth of the game's popularity, has died. He was 77. Mr. Stern took charge of the sport in 1984, and during his 30 years in office saw basketball's revenues increase more than 30 fold.
