The government in Italy has introduced severe restrictions on the movement of people in much of the north of the country in an effort to contain the spread of the new corona virus. These will affect roughly 16 million people in Lombardy and 14 other provinces. In his announcement early on Sunday morning, the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte described the measures as rigorous but necessary. We want to guarantee the health of our citizens. We understand that all these measures will create inconveniences. We understand that these measures will impose sacrifices, sometimes small and sometimes very big. But this is a time when we must take responsibility for ourselves. We need to understand that all of us need to adhere to the measures. Any travel in these areas will require special permission. All the measures, such as the closure of museums and cinemas were later be expanded to cover the rest of the country.

The Venezuelan Interior Minister Nestor Reverol says at least 38 workers from the state oil company PDVSA have been arrested for oil trafficking. Mr. Reverol called the actions treason. He said those detained included the president of a shipping subsidiary and 30 crew members of an oil tanker. The minister said the tanker had illegally sold its oil cargo.

The Brazilian former football star Ronaldinho Gaucho and his brother have been ordered to remain in pre-trial detention in Paraguay on charges of using false documents to enter the country. With more, here is Candace Piette. There's a 7-hour hearing in front of the judge on Friday. He'd appeared for the first time. And prosecutors had decided then that there was a case for leniency because Ronaldinho had been very cooperative with them. So they came to the judge asking an alternative punishment, a contribution to a local Paraguayan charity. But the judge absolutely refused this. She said both men would be held for an undetermined period while the case was properly investigated.

A Chilean man has died of his injuries received during clashes between demonstrators and the police in the capital Santiago. There are unconfirmed reports that he was hit in the head by a tear gas canister fired by police. Thousands of people had gathered in the centre of Santiago on Friday night. They were renewing demands for more government action to address social inequality in Chile.
