And in Pakistan, Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for a double suicide bombing in Islamabad. Six people were killed in the attack on the International Islamic University. It's the first assault in the Pakistani capital since the army began its offensive against the insurgents in the north of the country four days ago.
The Taliban promised to hit back after the army's offensive. Today, they did. The surprised target--a seat of Islamic learning. Two bombers struck almost simultaneously, one in this faculty building.
Well, you can see how powerful the blast was by the damage that was caused. Sections of the roof have come down, and over here a massive hole has been punched right through the wall. This was the office of a professor of Sharia law and the bomber struck just outside on the corridor.
The other bomber tried to enter the women's cafeteria, but was blocked by a guard. Many schools and colleges countrywide were already closed for fear of attack, but the doors had stayed open here.
"Everybody was crying, you know, we were very surprised. And I think how these people are...they say they are Islamic. They are killing their brothers. We are their brothers. We are their children. And they are killing us?"
But others were angry with the government. Chants of "shame! shame!" directed at the Interior Minister Rehman Malik when he came to the scene.
"They are...they are responsible for these deaths. They are responsible."
Protesters said the army offensive against the Taliban had triggered the suicide attacks. This was their send-off for the minister. Today's bombings were the seventh major attack in a fortnight. Fear is gripping the nation. The government has appealed for unity, saying the attacks are a test of nerve in a time of war.
The BBC's Orla Guerin reporting. And educational institutions have been shut down across Pakistan as a precaution in the wake of the latest suicide bombings.
