"Live one day at a time" might be the motto for a growing group of fatigued young white-collar Chinese known as "burnout."

These people can be doctors, bank employees, teachers, journalists, traffic officers, civil servants, actors and taxi drivers. Typically, they work alone and for more than 50 hours a week. They feel as if they have given all their energy and all they get in return is a sense of emptiness.

Psychological expert Huang Ling says this situation is a sign that a person is running out of endurance.

A netizen named "swimming fish" has been working for five years. She says after graduation she was extremely passionate about work, and she considered working overtime normal. But now things are different.

She says going all out on the job doesn't make any sense for her.

However, these burnouts are posing a dilemma for many companies. Zhang Caiman is the head of a tourism agency. He says he has several eraser men on his team, and they have had a negative impact on the company's development.

"First, they make business less efficient, and it results in a lower quality of service; then, our customer will decrease and business will shrink. Therefore, eraser men should not be underestimated."

But what turns people into eraser men? Some people believe it stems from a rut many employees might find themselves in after working several years.

HR manager Lu Juncheng says it's a normal phenomenon in many people's careers. Having worked three, five or seven years, these people can't see a clear future career path ahead.

Some psychological experts believe this phenomenon is caused by the nature of a job resembling an assembly line, although which raises the production efficiency, lowers the sense of achievement of employees.

People who are under high pressure, are working overtime and have fewer promotional opportunities are prone to becoming burnouts.

For CRI, I am Zhang Wan.
