民以食为天,相信大家都很喜欢美食的吧。它是一种面粉做的薄饼。它的做法简单,口味却变化无穷。它是风靡全球的法国食品,法国的一个节日也是以它命名。你知道它是什么美食吗?

Reporter:

February 2 is a traditional French holiday, Candlemas, where people chant and dance on the streets and in the pubs to celebrate good harvests. On that day a special food is served, therefore the holiday has another name--"avec Crepe Day". That's right, the food is called crepe.

Crepes are a traditional French food. While originating from Brittany, a region in Northwest France, it's popular throughout France. There's a belief that if you catch crepe with a frying pan after tossing it in the air with your left hand and holding a gold coin in your right hand, you would become rich that year. Now crepes are a national dish of France and increasingly popular in North and South America.

The crepe looks like a thin pancake, and it's easy to make. You just need to prepare some flour, milk, eggs, water and a little bit of salt to make the batter and put anything you like on the top or as filling.

Walden Wei, Executive Sous Chef of the JW Marriott Hotel, tells you how to make crepes with fresh fruits and grand marnier.

"First put some oil on the griddle, take three spoon of batter on the stove, and use a spatula to make it round, looks like making Jian Bing on Beijing streets. After 30 second when the bottom turns golden brown color, we take it out. Then we make sauce. We put some fresh butter in the pan and three spoons of sugar and wait until the butter and sugar melt to become brown with little pops in it. We put three cups of grand marnier in. when it's boiling, we put juice of a whole orange in. When the sauce reduces to half amount, we take it out. Put the crepes in the middle of the plate and pour the sauce on top. Arrange the fruits on top of the sauce. Besides, you can put some whip cream and a mint leaf as a garnish."

At last we spread some icing sugar and nuts. Now, you can enjoy your crepes."

Well, the dish looks appetizing: red strawberries, white bananas, golden crepes, and green mint leaves. The fresh fruits wake up every taste bud in your mouth, and melt with the whip cream and perfectly matches the flavor of grand marnier sauce. No wonder it's the favorite food of so many people around the world.

As we all know, French food is sophisticated: they have mousse bouche as the first course, followed by the cold appetizer, hot appetizer, the main course, the fish course, and dessert as the last. They have strict rules on wines when serving different dishes, like the red wines go with red meat and white wine is served with chicken and fish. So on the menu of a fancy French restaurant, crepes are popular desserts and traditionally served with cider. It's also served in creperie stands as fast food or street food with coffee, tea, or buttermilk. Walden Wei recommends one way of having crepes that may adapt to the Chinese taste.

"You can scramble some eggs with cheese as the filling of crepes, sided with some mashed potatoes. It's a nutritious breakfast, and easy to make. "

People like crepes since they can put anything they like on top or as filling. Apart from sweet crepes, you can have cheese, vegetables, ham or mushrooms to make it savory. There's a famous French cake made of many layers of crepes, called Mille Crepe, which is popular, globally.

Making crepes can give free rein to your imagination. Among so many flavors of crepes, I bet there must be one that suits your taste.
