God's Pocket is a district in South Philadelphia, a ragged blue-collar community where people just scrape by, the kind of place that when bizarre things happen, they say you have to come from God's Pocket to understand. Then there's Mickey who doesn't and whose wayward step-son has just been killed in an incident at work. His mother wants to know what happened. And Mickey loves his wife and wants to help. Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his last films, God's Pocket, with Christina Hendricks, who for several years has played alongside director John Slattery in Mad Men. God's Pocket is far from glossy Madison Avenues you can get. It is also an ensemble drama with a strong cast including John Turturro, Richard Jenkins and Eddie Marsan. I asked John Slattery how for his first feature he assembled such a team.

I didn't want anyone to do me any favours. I didn't want it to be that, because I've been on the other end of that, and you regret it eventually, either the part isn't so good or the conditions are too, whatever, I didn't want it to be that. So I went through the proper channels to everybody's representative. And I think Christina Hendricks I gave the script to, because she was in the next room. I didn't wanna have to convince anyone, because then you end up having to explain something. If they don't understand it, if they don't connect to it emotionally, then most of these people are, you know, so well established that they wouldn't do it anyway. I mean if Philip Hoffman didn't see himself in that part, he wouldn't have chosen it. I didn't have to twist his arm. I had to wait for his, an opening in his extremely busy schedule.
