A flight attendant surnamed Li, 21, was killed on her way home from Zhengzhou airport in the early morning on May 6, after hailing a private car using the Didi Hitch service the night before.

The Hitch service will be suspended between 10pm and 6am every day, and passengers and car-owners who are still on trips that begin before the curfew will receive special safety reminders before they set out.

Didi said the Emergency Help function will be redesigned and become more prominently displayed in the app for all rides using Didi.

The company said it’s already working with law enforcement authorities to screen drivers through background checks to make sure those who have committed violent crimes are excluded from the platform.
