[00:05.48]Expansion 5
[00:10.53]Exercise 2
[00:12.59]Last month, we asked you to write about
[00:14.91]the ways that you like to learn English
[00:16.86]and about the things that have helped you.
[00:19.20]Here are some of your letters:
[00:21.48]I have learned English in school.
[00:23.90]I have a very good English teacher
[00:26.31]who speaks beautiful English
[00:28.37]and who makes us all love to learn English.
[00:31.35]But I do not have any one to talk to in English
[00:34.13]after class because we all speak Chinese
[00:36.95]when class is over.
[00:38.78]All I have done is to try to speak some English
[00:41.70]to myself at home.
[00:43.43]I read aloud, make dialogues, prepare short
[00:46.60]speeches,and also read English newspapers.
[00:49.93]I find all these helpful.
[00:52.25]Tammy
[00:54.36]I don't like to speak
[00:55.42]in front of the whole class.
[00:57.12]When we need to repeat words-
[00:58.86]some new vocabulary, for example-
[01:01.19]I prefer to say them as a whole class,
[01:03.45]all together and not just me on my own!
[01:06.14]Mike
[01:07.60]I like watching movies in English.
[01:09.85]But I don't like to see the subtitles
[01:11.69]in my native language.
[01:13.89]When you watch a video,
[01:15.26]you can't take the subtitles away,
[01:17.66]but with a DVD there are different choices.
[01:20.76]You can have the subtitles in your language
[01:23.33]or you can have them in English
[01:25.14]or you can choose to watch the movie
[01:27.62]without any subtitles at all
[01:30.15]DVDs are really good for learners.
[01:32.97]Alan
[01:34.99]I like to read books.
[01:37.08]If you read a lot in English,
[01:39.04]your vocabulary improves.
[01:41.36]I like to read stories
[01:42.61]that I know from my native language
[01:44.85]or stories that I have seen at the movies.
[01:47.76]For example, at the moment
[01:49.40]I am reading the second Harry Potter story.
[01:52.28]It's really good! Liz.
[01:59.96]Exercise 5
[02:02.39]The world's language syetem is at the crossroads
[02:06.19]According to one new student,
[02:08.22]the percentage of people who use English
[02:10.23]as their first language is becoming less.
[02:13.94]In the mid-20th centry,
[02:15.90]nearly 9 percent of the world population
[02:18.62]grew up speaking English as their first language
[02:21.84]In 2050,the number is expected to be 5 percent.
[02:26.62]In the future, more and more people will speak
[02:30.05]more than one language.
[02:31.76]The major language will possibly be Chinese,
[02:35.01]English,Spanish,Urdu,and Arabic.
[02:39.23]Many people believe that Mandar in Chinese will
[02:42.64]probably be the next must-learn language,
[02:45.60]especially in Asia.
