Defense Secretary Robert Gates recommends closing the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The center has been the subject of criticism after reports of substandard care surfacing earlier this year. Now Gates says no matter how much money is poured into that hospital, it is still old and should be replaced with a new facility.

Menu Foods is expanding its pet food recall again. The company says products originally thought not to include melamine-tainted wheat gluten may have been cross-contaminated. Those foods were manufactured at the same plants as some of the tainted foods recalled earlier. Since mid-March, Menu Foods has recalled more than 5,300 pet food products. Ten Republican presidential hopefuls will each get their chance tonight to explain in detail why they should be president. Tonight's 90-minute GOP debate takes place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Arizona senator John McCain, just some of the names that will sprinkle the States this afternoon political heavy weights that'll be debating. Unannounced but potential top contenders, Fred Tompson, Newt Gingrich and Nebraska senator Chuck Hagel will not be present.

So, Queen Elizabeth II arrives in Virginia this afternoon. The Queen and her husband Prince Philip will help mark the 400th anniversary of James Town, the first permanent English settlement in America. The Queen also plans to meet with families and survivors of the Virginia Tech massacre, after attending the Kentucky Derby over the weekend, perhaps in the infield too, the Royal couple will touch base with President Bush.

Officials of the Kennedy Space Center say that astronaut Wally Schirra has passed away in California. Schirra was one of the original/ Mercury 7 astronauts and flew on Gemini and Apollo spacecraft. Schirra was the fifth US citizen in space and the third to orbit the Earth. He was 84 years old.
