Hello, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn centre in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Firefighters on Santa Catalina Island are struggling to extinguish a 4000-acre wildfire that is bearing down on the city of Avalon. One home and a few small businesses outside the city have burned and some 12,000 homes, are in the area are under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders.

The Fort Dix Six are in Federal Court today. All six of the men are accused of hatching a terrorist plot to gun down soldiers at the army base in New Jersey. They entered court for a bond hearing earlier this morning. The government is arguing that all of the suspects were born outside the US and therefore pose a flight risk. Two suspects were in the US illegally.

The US commander in northern Iraq says he needs more help. Major General Benjamin Nixon says that he requested more troops to help control an increasingly violent Diyala province. He also wants Iraq's government to become one that works and supplies services for the people.

Celebrating a milestone and mourning a tragedy both happened at Virginia Tech today. As the university holds its graduation, about 5,000 students will receive diplomas. During the commencement ceremony, photographs of the fallen students and professors will be projected onto a giant screen.

Close call or you might want to make that a wake-up call in New Hampshire. A woman's SUV barreling off a road and into the Connecticut River. Police say she fell asleep at the wheel. The SUV with just its top peaking out of the river floated about a mile downstream. And all the while, the driver was pressing her face against the glass while gasping for air. The driver survived. She had cuts, bruises and hyperthermia, but she is going to be O.K..
