Good afternoon to you, I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

The top US commander in Iraq General David Petraeus says he believes he knows who kidnapped the three American soldiers missing since last weekend, an insurgent leader with ties to al-Qaeda. Other US military commanders say they believe at least two perhaps all three are still alive. Right now, an all-out search for the soldiers goes on. They disappeared a week ago when their team was ambushed.

Trying to stop deadly violence in Gaza, Palestinian factions reached a new ceasefire agreement, their fifth this week. On top of the internal battles, Israel launched air strikes against militant Hamas targets, in response to rocket attacks on border communities.

Killings and kidnappings across Mexico, as the war against drug gangs escalates and spreads to US border communities. Some 24,000 Mexican troops are being deployed to combat the problem. The governors of Arizona and New Mexico are demanding more border patrol agents.

Women may soon have a new option in birth control. And this would be the first to stop monthly periods indefinitely. The FDA is expected to announce approval next week for the contraceptive pill, Lybrel. It is designed to suppress monthly bleeding for as long as it is taken. Lately other pills that shorten monthly periods have become very popular. Many doctors say there are no health risks to reducing or eliminating monthly cycles.

Rescuers plan a new tactic to move a pair of wayward whales. They are 90 miles up the Sacramento River. Rescuers played whale sounds this week to try to lure them to sea. It didn't work. Next banging metal to annoy the whales so they'll want to leave.
