Hello, from the cnn center here in Atlanta, I'm Melissa Long with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Dozens of people have been killed in a fierce gun battle between Lebanese government troops and Islamic militants. Today's fighting started around 9:40 in the morning Eastern Standard Time near a refugee camp in the northern Lebanon, rather, the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli. It is linked to a government forces raid early Sunday morning in Tripoli. Today's fighting is believed to be some of the worst since the civil war ended in 1990.
Israel has launched a wave of new strikes against targets in Gaza. Palestinian security sources say four Islamic Jihad militants were killed in the strike at a car. Israel's Security Cabinet decided to escalate military action after dozens of rockets were fired on Israeli towns.
The US Senate is set to do some political battling over immigration today. A bipartisan deal was reached on an immigration bill last week, but Liberals and Conservatives have already lined up to challenge it. Many detractors criticize the plan for granting undocumented workers too quick a path to citizenship.
New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is officially in the race for president. He formally announced plans to seek the Democratic nomination today. Seven other Democrats and ten Republicans are currently running for president.
American commuters are now paying the most ever for gasoline. Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey says the average cost of filling-up is now $3.18 a gallon. Gas prices have risen 11 cents in just the past couple of weeks.
There is a new No.1 at the box office. Shrek III ousts Spider-Man 3 from the top spot in record fashion actually. So far, the film has raked in an estimated 122-million dollars in its opening weekend. That's the highest ever for Animated Motion Picture.
