Very good Wednesday to you, I'm Veronica De La Cruz at the cnn center in Atlanta. Let's take a look at what is happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.
The US military is working to identify a body found in the Euphrates River, south of Baghdad. The body was dressed in what looked like a US military uniform and could be one of the three US soldiers missing in Iraq. Iraqi officials say the body had gunshot wounds to the head and torso. Major General William Caldwell says the military is gonna be very careful when it comes to making a positive identification.
The past 24 hours have been especially bloody for the US military in Iraq. At least nine troops have been killed. A string of roadside bombs targeted at a patrol, killing three soldiers. Two Marines died during a firefight in the western Anbar province. Two Task Force Lightning soldiers were killed near Baghdad when a bomb went off near their vehicle. Also in Baghdad, two soldiers died in separate incidents, one by small-arms fire and another by a roadside bomb.
Back on the Hill today, Monica Goodling, the former White House Liaison at the Justice Department will break her silence about the scandal surrounding the firings of eight federal prosecutors. She is expected to receive immunity for testifying before the House Judiciary Committee later this morning.
Authorities are trying to find out what a student from the late Jerry Falwell's Liberty University planned to do with five homemade bombs. 19-year-old Mark Uhl was arrested on explosive charges on a tip from a family member. He was apparently upset about an anti-gay group that planned to protest Falwell's funeral. Police say five napalm-like bombs were found in his car.
In California, scientists working to steer two wandering whales back toward the Pacific Ocean say the pair's health appears to be deteriorating. The mother and her calf are both wounded apparently from a run-in with a boat propeller. Experts say they are testing skin samples taken from the mother to assess her condition. Crews banged metal pipes underwater yesterday to try to herd the whales downstream. They are still 70 miles from the ocean in the Sacramento River.
And that is going to get you up-to-date. For more on any these stories as well as other news of the day, don't forget that cnn is always your source online or on TV.
