Hello, I am Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Shiite Cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr appeared in public today for the first time in four months. He delivered a fiery anti-American sermon in the Iraqi city of Kufa before thousands of supporters. U.S. military says Al-Sadr went into hiding in Iran after the U.S. announced a new security crackdown early in the year. The radical cleric's aides say he's been in Iraq all along.

Police are searching for a home invasion suspect in Denver who let them on a high speed car chase. The man drove erratically before getting out of the SUV, carrying a bag and getting back into the vehicle and driving to an apartment complex. A perimeter has been set up in the area and people living nearby are urged to lock their doors and report any suspicious activity immediately. Schools, they are also taking precautions. Two of them are on lockdown.

Wildlife experts distract a ten-foot gator, nickname Charley,that has been terrorizing people in the south Florida neighborhood in Miami Lakes. Neighbor spotted Charley lurking in the lake about a week ago, coming onshore. Some of them got even close enough to tie a rope around its mouth and called police, but Charley didn't like that very much and he chewed to the rope and set itself free. There are also reports the gator was shot by a resident with a spear gun, so it could be wounded .Well now that it's been caught, wildlife experts say he will be killed.

Scientists planned to spray fire hoses near two lost whales in a California river today. It's the latest attempt to lure them back to the Pacific. The fire hose method has never been tried before. Scientists don't know how the whales will react. They are also working on a plan to inject antibiotics into the whales to help heal their wounds.

Record gas prices aren't enough to keep travellers off the roads this Memorial Day weekend. AAA estimated 38 million people would travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend. That's up nearly two percent from last year. AAA also says flights are up five percent from last Memorial Day .
