Hello, I’m Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta. Let’s get you up-to-date with a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

An explosion on Beirut’s waterfront has left ten people dead including a member of the Lebanese Parliament. Police say the explosion was part of an apparently successful assassination attempt on parliament member Walid Eido. His son and two of his bodyguards were also killed. Eido was regarded as an anti-Syrian member of Lebanon’s Parliament.

Baghdad is under a curfew now following an attack on a Shiite mosque in Samarra, Iraq. Today’s attack targeted the golden shrine, the same holy mosque which was bombed last February. And that attack sparked widespread sectarian violence in Baghdad. The U.S. says it has evidence that the attack was an inside job and that 15 members of Iraq Security Forces have been arrested.

Veteran Israeli political figure, Shimon Peres, won election as president of Israel Wednesday after two other candidates pulled out of the race. He is a former prime minister. He will take over the presidency from Moshe Katsav who was suspended because of charges of sexual misconduct against him. Katsav denies the accusations.

Another former prime minister, Ehud Barak, has won control of the Labor Party. He was swept from power by Ariel Sharon six years ago after his peace deal with Palestinians fail through. And now he is in a position to defeat Sharon’s successor Ehud Olmert.

A military search team says it has recovered the body of the soldier missing from Fort Hood in Texas. Sergeant Lawrence G. Sprader was found on a rugged army post after a massive air and ground search. An autopsy is being conducted to figure out what caused his death. He went missing on Friday while on a map reading exercise.
