Hello, I am Melissa Long at the cnn center in Atlanta with some of the headlines that are NOW IN THE NEWS.
Palestinian militant group Hamas now controls all of Gaza after defeating the rival Fatah faction, but after months of on-and-off fighting between the two factions, the crisis is far from over. Fatah security forces still largely control the West Bank. Hamas signals today it may be ready to negotiate.
The Arab League is meeting in Cairo today to discuss the situation in Gaza. Hamas is in control there again after defeating Palestinian security forces. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared a state of emergency and dissolved parliament, but Prime Minister Ismail Haniya is rejecting the declaration and pledges to stay in office.
President Bush's immigration reform effort is apparently back on track. Senate leaders reached a deal last night to bring the bill back to the floor. That could happen as early as next week.Under the plan, both Democrats and Republicans would be able to tack on ten amendments of piece to the legislation. One of those amendments includes a Bush-backed plan to use more than 4 billion dollars to boost border security and crackdown on the hiring of illegal immigrants.
Durham, North Carolina prosecutor Mike Nifong is defending his actions in the Duke lacrosse rape case. He's hoping to convince the North Carolina State Bar that he acted properly and therefore should not be disbarred. His testimony at his ethics hearing followed an appearance by Reade Seligmann,one of the lacrosse players he charged. The case against Seligmann and the others was eventually dropped.
Reputed Mississippi Klansman James Ford Seale faces life in prison in connection with the kidnappings and deaths of two African-American teens in the 1964. A jury convicted Seale kidnapping and conspiracy in the case yesterday. Another confess Klansman testified the Seale and others tied weights to Charles Moore, Henry Dee and drowned them in the Mississippi River. Seale will be sentenced August 24th.
