Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening Now In The News on this Monday.
Police in Tennessee, they are still piecing together evidence of a deadly car show crash of the weekend. 6 people were killed Saturday when a drag racing car plowed into a crowd at a children's charity event west of Memphis. Authority say they have held that event for 18 years without any problems. All the people killed were in their teens and twenties. The youngest victims, 2 of them, were 15, at least 20 others were injured. So far no charges have been filed against the driver.
A 4-year-old girl has been found dead after a flash flood tore through a pair of trailer parks outside the Fort Worth, Texas this morning. Natasha Collins says her family was climbing into a boat to be rescued when the boat capsized and her daughter Alexandra was swept away. Many families rushed to the roof tops as the rapidly rising water swamped about 100 mobile homes and washed away many of them from their foundations.
US and Iraqi forces have launched new operations against insurgents north and south of Baghdad. And in Amarah British forces fought fierce battles with Shiite militia men while going house to house looking for weapons. 36 people were killed and a number of suspects were arrested.
And in Baghdad, 9 people were killed when 2 car bombs exploded close to each other near a fuel station. 25 others were hurt.
The US military is expressing regret that a coalition airstrike in Afghanistan killed 7 children. Official say several militants were also killed and 2 were detained in yesterday's strike. The coalition spokesman says there was no sign of children around the building before that airstrike was ordered. The UN has sent a team to investigate that incident.
The delivery of the world's first Giant Manta Ray born in captivity was captured on tape after a year-long pregnancy. Year-long pregnancy again, the baby was born on Saturday in a massive tank at a Japanese aquarium. The 6-foot-wide baby girl was born as mom swims off then it quickly spreads its own fins and starts swimming. Scientists say this real birth will help them to gather valuable data about the little-understood species.
