The Space Shuttle Atlantis will not be landing in Florida this afternoon as scheduled. The 2:18 pm landing has been scrubbed because of weather there. The shuttle has a total of five chances to land in Florida or California today. The last comes at Edwards Airforce Space in the California desert at 6:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
For more than 30 years after the Vietnam War, Vietnam's Communist president is on a landmark visit to the US. Nguyen Minh Triet met with President Bush at the White House today. The main topic was trade. The two countries did 10 billion dollars worth of business last year. But Mr. Triet wants even stronger trade ties with the US and has brought a delegation of business leaders to make this case. Members of Congress have been critical of the visit, pointing to what they say is Vietnam's dismal human rights record.
A top-level White House meeting that had been set for today on the future of the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay Cuba has been cancelled. It comes after the Associated Press reported that US officials were nearing a decision to close the prison. Administration officials deny any decision is near but they also say that eventually closing Guantanamo Bay has been a long-held policy. A big question, though, is what to do with the detainees.
And thousands gather today in Charleston, South Carolina to honor the nine firefighters that were killed in Monday's furniture store fire. Firefighters from around the country, dignitaries, politicians, and family and friends remember the group today in a memorial service. Tens of thousands of people show their support and Charleston's Fire Chief Rusty Thomas said that he knew each of the names personally and they were all killed doing what they loved best---fighting fires.

Automakers are strongly opposing that measure. They would have until 2020 to manufacture vehicles with average mileage standards of 35 miles per gallon. And it also requires a large boost in ethanol production. The House now takes up that measure.
