A fight is brewing between President Bush and Congress over the issue of executive privilege. Is there a fight brewing? While congressional committees investigating the firings of several US attorneys want former White House Counsel Harriet Miers to testify before Congress, this morning, President Bush invoked executive privilege to keep her and former White House political director Sara Taylor from doing that.
A staggering amount of smoke is in the air out West. Hundreds of wildfires are burning across more than a dozen states. This is a map from the Forest Service and here's what it looks like on the ground. This is police dash cam video of the 300,000-acre Milford Flat fire jumping the highway, making it nearly impossible to see. The fire is blamed for two traffic related fatalities.
There are mandatory evacuations ahead of a pair of growing wildfires in Southern California. A firefighting helicopter crashed there but no one was seriously injured.
A British toddler snatched and held by gunmen for four days in Nigeria is back with her parents today. Her family says that other than some mosquito bites, the three-year-old seems to be just fine. The kidnappers had threatened to kill the girl unless her British father took her place. Instead, they released her unharmed last night. Hundreds of foreigners have been kidnapped in the oil rich country recently but this is the first time a child from the West was taken.
Four Muslim men have been found guilty of plotting to bomb London's public transit system on July 21, 2005. The failed terrorist attacks came two weeks after the deadly seven-seven suicide bombings that killed 52 people. Police say that if the second series of attacks had succeeded, they would have caused similar carnage as the first.
Thousands of people are in Pamplona, Spain for the annual Running of the Bulls. Seven people got minor injuries in today's run. And yesterday at least seven people were crushed, and two others were gored. The Running of the Bulls dates back to the 16th century but became famous in the Ernest Hemingway novel -The Sun Also Rises.
