Hello I'm Melissa Long at the cnn Center here in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Senate Democrats were unable to stop the debate on proposal that would limit US troop deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. cnn has learned Republican Senator Olympia Snowe will co-sponsor a separate troop withdrawal amendment that would bring US troops home from Iraq by April. A vote on that measure is expected in the coming days and in the meantime, President Bush is standing firm on his strategy to maintain troop levels in Iraq until he hears otherwise from his top General David Petraeus.
Congressional Democrats have been waiting to hear from President Bush's former political director about the firings of several federal prosecutors. And even though Sara Taylor appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee today, they will have to keep waiting. Taylor only answered limited questions because the President has directed her not to comply with the subpoena unless a court orders her to do so.
The NTSB, National Transportation Safety Board, says it will look at maintenance records of a small plane that crashed in suburban Orlando yesterday. Five people were killed, two on board and three on the ground. An off-duty firefighter who lives close by is credited with saving a man and a 10-year-old boy.
There are new developments in an odd bank robbery case in Erie, Pennsylvania. You may remember these pictures of pizza delivery man Brian Wells sitting there in front of police, wearing a collar bomb, pleading for help. He was killed by that bomb as police stood by. And now almost four years later, sources with knowledge of the investigation say investigators believe Wells was involved in the bank robbery plot that ultimately led to his death. Investigators are charging two people in that case.
