From the cnn Center in Atlanta, I am Nicole Lapin. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

A security scare that forced a London-bound American Airlines flight to make an emergency landing in New York, but now officials say it was all of a big misunderstanding. The pilot landed at New York's JFK airport after a flight attendant said she had seen one of the passengers taking an employee bus to a departure gate in Los Angeles and basically bypassing airport security. But after checking out surveillance video, US officials did determine that the man was not on an employee bus after all, and he did go through the regular security screening.

Other news around the country right now. A FedEx package that had been beeping arrived at the Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards' headquarters this morning. Authorities urged Edwards' campaign staff to evacuate just as a precaution. Authorities are still investigating that package. But it is the third time that authorities have responded to letters addressed to the Chapel Hill, North Carolina office for John Edwards. In both previous instances, the packages turned out to be nothing though.

And some drivers really had to scramble to get to the top of their cars when a massive water main break flooded part of Interstate 96 near Detroit. Rescue and utility crews pulled them to safety, luckily. But earlier reports from officials on the scene indicate that the break might have been caused by somebody striking a fire hydrant. Crews have been able to shut off the water since then. But now the tour of cleaning up starts to take place.

And in South Dakota, the state has carried out its very first execution in its 60 years. Elijah Page died by a lethal injection for the 2000 torture and murder of a 19-year-old man. Page gave up his remaining appeals. South Dakota's governor postponed Page's execution last spring over concerns about drugs used for lethal injection but those drugs were later changed.

And switching gears just a little bit. Breaking was centuries-old traditions. Some Britains in the lower courts are no longer required to wear wigs. We are talking about judges and lawyers here. A new dress rule in place means that wigs are no longer needed in civil or family court cases, as they still may be worn in criminal courts. But in recent review, many thought that the wigs were simply uncomfortable and quite frankly, very expensive. A judge's wig can actually cost 3,000 bucks.

Those are the headlines at this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is always your source whether you are watching online, watching on TV or watching on your cell phone. Thanks so much for watching.
