Even after senate chambers became bed chambers, Democrats could not force an amendment to withdraw troops from Iraq past a Republican filibuster. A vote to end debate which lasted all night, failed a short time ago. The measure would have mandated all combat troops to leave Iraq by next April. President Bush has promised to veto any bill that sets any type of troop withdrawal deadlines.

A man who claims to be a top Al Qaeda in Iraq leader is in custody. Khaled al-Mashhadani was captured in the northern city of Mosul two weeks ago. The US military says he may be the most senior Iraqi member of the insurgent group known as Al Qaeda in Iraq. They say he has been in contact with Osama bin Laden. Military officials say Mashhadani is providing information about the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, an umbrella organization for Iraqi insurgent groups.

Investigators say it looks like the pilot of a Brazilian airliner are trying to take off after overshooting a runway at Sao Paulo. This simulation shows the path the plane followed as it attempted to land on that rainy runway in the heart of the city. *At least 200 people were killed when that plane skidded off a highway, rather, off the runway, across a highway slammed into that building that housed the airline's express courier service.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says the closure of North Korea's nuclear facilities is complete. That comes as UN envoys from both North and South Korea, as well the US, China, Japan and Russia are planning to meet in Beijing to discuss the next step; North Korea shut the facilities in return for the first oil shipment from South Korea under a February aid-for-disarmament deal. Envoys met for about 90 minutes today and planned to talk again tomorrow on ways to end North Korea's nuclear arms potential.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has yet to respond to the federal indictment against him. He and three others are charged with acquiring and training pit bulls for competitive dogfighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines. This alleged operation was centered at Vick's property in Virginia. The federal indictment also gruesomely outlined how losing dogs were put to death. It included shooting, drowning, hanging and electrocution. Vick'll be arraigned July, 26th.

The ex-army sniper accused of killing his wife is dead. Police say David Munis shot himself in the chest as searchers closed in on him yesterday in rural Wyoming. The massive hunt for Munis included helicopters and dog teams. He was accused of shooting his wife as she sang on stage at a restaurant on Saturday. *Court documents say his wife told Munis, ur rather, told police that Munis was harassing her just day before her death.
