【电信1】 Realvideo / MP3

Good afternoon to you. Thank you for joining us. I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn Center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

In Southern Massachusetts, firefighters from dozens of communities battle an
eight-alarm blaze at a converted mill. The building houses nearly 65 businesses. A police spokeswoman says no one was inside. 80% of the structure is destroyed.

Volunteers turned out today in the South Tampa Bay area. They are searching 300 acres of farmland for the body of Susan Fast. The construction company owner disappeared June, 29th. GPS placed her Lexus in the area just after her disappearance. Fast's stepson is jailed and charged with stealing her SUV. Police say they are trying to build a case against him.

The Taliban claims to have killed two German hostages in Afghanistan today because Germany refused to meet its demand and withdraw troops from Afghanistan. But an Afghan government official says one hostage died of a heart attack and the other is still alive. Also the fate of a group of South Korean hostages captured in Afghanistan this week is unclear. They were kidnapped from a bus. A Taliban spokesman says the Leadership Council will decide today what to do with the hostages. The South Koreans were in Afghanistan to do volunteer medical work.

North Korea knows exactly whatever it wants in exchange for scrapping its nuclear program: two light water power generating reactors. That's the word from a north envoy in talks aimed at getting the communist country to permanently pull the plug on its nuclear facilities. Its only operating reactor was closed last week.
1*North Korea insists the US promise the light water reactors to it in a 1994 disarmament deal. 2*That agreement fell apart eight years earlier, excuse me, eight years later, triggering the current standoff.

At least four American airlines' flights bound for Brazil were forced to return to Miami today. The jets were turned around after an unexplained two-hour outage at a radar facility in the Amazon. Authorities say the facility is now back up and running. The radar problem comes after Tuesday's airport disaster in Sao Paulo. 191 people died in the crash, which is the worst in Brazil's history.

Animal rights groups are making it clear that they want Michael Vick to be fired by Nike and out of the NFL after his indictment on dog fighting charges. These protesters gathered outside Nike headquarters in Oregon, calling on the shoe giant to end its association with Vick.
PETA led these protests in front of NFL headquarters in New York yesterday, calling for Vick's immediate suspension. Vick is expected to be arraigned on Monday.

And those are the headlines this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is your source online, on TV, or when you are on the go.

Words&Expressions

8-alarm fire:The number of alarms corresponds to the number of firefighters called to the scene. But there's no simple relationship between the two.
PETA:People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an animal rights organization based in the United States. 人道对待动物协会。

Note
1.North Korea insists the US promise the light water reactors to it in a 1994 disarmament deal. 虚拟语气,还原是North Korea insists that the US should promise the light water reactors ......

2*That agreement fell apart eight years earlier, excuse me, eight years later, triggering the current standoff. execuse me表示说错了,后面更正。似乎男性说错了,倾向于使用execuse me直接表示道歉,而女性比较喜欢说rather“更确切地说应该是......”比较委婉地更正。
